Today’s veterans return from the battlefield with serious physical and psychological damage, traumatic brain injuries, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or other issues. Many often seek to deal with these problems with substance abuse instead of seeking professional help.
The resulting addictions can lead to alienation from friends and family, inability to find and keep a job, and frustration with their life. These mental health issues can directly lead to involvement in the criminal justice system.
That’s where the Davidson County Veterans Court steps in. Through a supervision and treatment program, the court staff works with veterans to address the causes of their problems and help them regain control over their lives.
The court does not absolve the veteran of responsibility for their actions but instead provides structure and assistance to help give them back control of their lives.
